The year was 1835. The British Empire had just started the Industrial Revolution and they wanted raw materials for everything – a lot of it. In fact, they wanted so much that they could not do it just from their own country so they started stealing the resources from the countries that they had colonized, and India was a gold mine of resources. However, when it came to getting these study resources, they hit a wall. There were hardly twenty to thirty thousand British officials in the whole country, while there were more than ten million resident Indians. Thomas Babington proposed an idea to solve this logistical nightmare – use the resources of the Crown to educate the Indians. He argued that this would be an investment because the Indians at the time were afraid of the white man and followed them diligently. They would not only see this as a means of education and employment but also view the British as some sort of hero for educating the Indian people.
This plan worked out perfectly. This tactic was used by the British in all their other colonies as well. This is how English became so widespread all around the world and how it became a global language. Today it is the de facto lingua franca of everything from academic journals to the world wide web.
