Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is the process of understanding and reasoning by making use of concepts that are framed in words. It aims at evaluating thinking constructively instead of at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition.

Verbal reasoning tests tested intelligence and provide an assessment of an individual’s ability to think, reason, and make solutions to problems in different ways. For this reason, verbal reasoning tests were and still are used as entrance examinations by schools, colleges and universities as a means of selecting the ablest applicants. In addition, such tests are also used by an increasing number of employers as part of the recruitment process.

Vocabulary and english grammar rules can function both as topics of focus as well as prerequisites of verbal reasoning. In the former capacity, they are often used to form propositions and arguments while in the latter capacity, they were the subject of analysis and evaluation, where verbal reasoning was used to synthesize linguistic information and analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, words, and concepts.

The basic element of reasoning is the proposition. A proposition is just the meaning behind a declarative sentence and it can be either true or false. In other words, a proposition is just something that one can know, belief, think about, assume, or so on. Only some statements count as propositions because the defining feature of a proposition is that it is making some assertion that can intelligibly be assigned a value of ‘truth’ or ‘false’.
