SDG 4

SDG 4 (or Global Goal 4) is about quality education, and it is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations in September 2015. SDG 4’s full title is “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and encourage opportunities for lifelong learning for everyone.”

SDG 4 consists of ten targets that are measured by 11 indicators. The seven “outcome-oriented targets” are as follows: free primary and secondary education; equal access to high-quality pre-primary education; affordable technical, vocational, and higher education; an increase in the number of people with relevant skills for financial success; the abolition of all forms of discrimination in education; universal literacy and numeracy; and education for sustainable development and global citizenship.

SDG 4 aspires to provide children and young people with high-quality education and easy access to other learning opportunities. The achievement of universal literacy and numeracy is one of its goals—a critical component of gaining knowledge and essential abilities in the learning environment. Hence, there is an urgent need to create more educational facilities and renovate the old ones to ensure secure, inclusive, and effective learning environments for all.

The existence of extreme poverty, insurgency, communal disputes, and other issues has slowed development in many developing countries. Children from low-income families are more likely than their wealthy peers to drop out of school. Disparities between rural and urban areas continue to be significant. The ongoing armed war in Western Asia and North Africa has resulted in a rise in the number of youngsters who are not attending school. Sub-Saharan Africa achieved the most gain in primary school enrollment among emerging regions, rising from 52 percent in 1990 to 78 percent in 2012, but significant discrepancies remain.
