Medium of Instruction

We all have heard about the medium of instruction but what is the exact meaning of this phrase, it should be known by every student. It can be the official language of the country or region. If the student’s mother tongue is different from the official language, it may be used as the language of instruction for part or all of the period of study. The medium of instruction should be according to the language that students understand the most. They should not be forced to learn in some other language. If there is a rule that they have to learn in a particular language then special classes should be there for that in which they are taught about the medium of instruction. Bilingual or multilingual education involves the use of more than one language of instruction in the schools and colleges. UNESCO considers that the provision of education in the mother tongue is indeed a matter of great importance. In post-secondary, college, and specialty programs, content can often be taught in a language not spoken at home by the student. This is called content-based learning or content and language integrated learning (CLIL). Learning more than one language is always beneficial so students should learn as many languages as possible. The medium of instruction should be decided after proper planning and thinking about how students can get benefits from it.
