Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education

The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, known by its more popular abbreviation ICFRE, is a governmental agency or an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Having its headquarters in Dehradun, the functions of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education are

  • To conduct forestry research
  • Transfer the technologies developed to the states of India and other user agencies
  • Impart forestry education. 

The ICFRE has nine research institutes and four advanced centers to cater to the research needs of different bio-geographical regions. These are located at the following places:

  • Dehradun
  • Shimla
  • Ranchi
  • Jorhat
  • Jabalpur
  • Jodhpur
  • Bengaluru
  • Coimbatore
  • Prayagraj
  • Chhindwara
  • Aizawl
  • Hyderabad
  • Agartala

ICFRE is the largest organization that is responsible for forestry research in India. It was created in the year 1986 under the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests India (CEFI) as a means of directing and managing research and education in the forestry sector in India. ICFRE is headed by a Director-General which has its headquarters at Dehradun, becoming an autonomous council under the Ministry in 1991.

The mandate of the ICFRE is to organise, direct and manage education and research in the forestry sector, which includes cooperation with FORTIP (UNDP FAO Regional Forest Tree Improvement Project), UNDP, as well as World Bank on economically important species. ICFRE has also established a National Bureau of Forest Genetic Resources (NBFGR).
