Father of Geography

Father of Geography

Eratosthenes (Father of geography) of Cyrene, an ancient Greek mathematician, and astronomer were the first to use the term geography. He is also known as the Father of Geography. Geography is the study of the Earth, its physical features, landmasses, seas, and oceans, natural phenomena that occur on Earth, and the people who live in this world and their interactions with the environment. The study of the planet Earth, its surface, and the varied patterns of its Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Atmosphere is known as physical geography. Father of geography made an extremely accurate globe map. His map has grid lines that look like the latitudes and longitudes that we use to plot various locations on the globe. He has computed the Earth’s circumference to a surprising degree of accuracy. A few measurements were used to calculate the circumference. One example was the depth of a well in Syene, where the sun’s rays only reached the bottom on the summer solstice day. He also knew how far Syene was from Alexandria. His greatest contribution to mathematics was the Eratosthenes sieve, a procedure for identifying prime numbers. Students should know at least the basics of geography because it helps in enhancing practical knowledge. Students should know about the continents and countries’ locations. It will also help in improving the general knowledge about the world.
