The seed for the Deccan Education Society was sown by the four young men mentioned above in 1880 by starting the New English School in Pune. This name, New English School, subsequently set a trend far and wide because of the educational revolution and high standards it brought about. However, they felt like they were destined to do much more for digital higher education than what they had done so far.

So, on the 24th of October, 1884, they founded the Deccan Education Society, which marked the beginning of a journey that strives towards helping students excel at their college education. It was started on one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar, Vijaya Dashami, celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna. These revolutionaries, as they are called today, saw education as a means of social reform and as the means of bringing about a new awakening in the masses and subsequently, intellectual salvation.

The first college under the DES was the Fergusson College which was established in 1885. Today, they run a total of 43 colleges in the state of Maharashtra.
