CoA – Council of Architecture

The Council of Architecture (CoA) was established by the Government of India in the Ministry of Education in accordance with the terms of the Architects Act, 1972, which was adopted by the Parliament of India and went into effect on September 1, 1972. CoA’s nodal ministry Or department is the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education. The Act mandates the registration of architects, as well as educational standards, recognized qualifications, and standards of practice that must be met by professional architects. The Council of Architecture is responsible for regulating architectural education and practice throughout India, as well as maintaining the architects’ registration. As provided for in the Act, the Government of India has issued Rules and the Council of Architecture has framed Regulations for this purpose.

Anyone wishing to practice the profession of Architect must first register with the Council of Architecture. For the purpose of registration, one must have the necessary qualification as specified in the Architects Act, as well as have completed the education required by the Council of Architecture (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020. A person may practice architecture if he is registered with the Council of Architecture and has a Certificate of Registration with current renewals. The registration also grants the right to use the title and style “Architect.” 

A company of architects with all partners registered with COA may also use the title and style of the architect. Limited Companies, Private/Public Companies, Societies, and other legal entities are not permitted to use the title and style of architect, nor are they permitted to practice architecture. If anybody falsely claims to be registered or misuses the title and style of architect, they are committing a criminal offense punishable under sections 36 or 37 (2) of the Architects Act, 1972.
