Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, sometimes also referred to as Baba Atomic Research Centre, is often referred to by its acronym BARC. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is India’s premier nuclear research facility with its headquarters situated in Trombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The Baba Atomic Research Institute was founded by the Homi Jehangir Bhabha, but back then it was called the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) in January 1954. BARC began as a multidisciplinary research program that has become invaluable for India’s nuclear program. It operates under the Department of Atomic Energy, which the Prime Minister of India directly oversees. After the demise of Dr. Bhabha, AEET was renamed as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to honor his contributions posthumously.

BARC is a multi-disciplinary research center having extensive infrastructure for advanced research and development. The research that takes place at BARC covers the entire spectrum of nuclear science, material sciences, metallurgy, chemical engineering, electronic instrumentation, biology and medicine, high-energy physics, supercomputing, plasma physics, and associated research for the Indian nuclear program and other related areas.

The core mandate of BARC is to sustain and promote the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. It takes care of all aspects of nuclear power generation, right from the theoretical design of reactors all the way to computer modeling and simulation, development and testing of new reactor fuel, risk analysis, materials, etc. It also researches spent fuel processing and safe disposal of nuclear waste. Other research focus areas of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre include applications for isotopes in industries, food and medicine, Radiation Technologies and their application to health, agriculture and environment, electronics, instrumentation, and reactor control, and material science, accelerator and Laser Technology, environment and radiation monitoring, etc.
