Sainik Schools are a chain of schools in India that are established and managed by the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence. The idea behind it was conceived in 1961 by V. K. Krishna Menon, the then Defence Minister of India, as a means of rectifying the regional and class imbalance amongst the Officer cadre of the Indian Military, and to prepare the students both mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy as well as the Indian Naval Academy. Sainik Schools, along with one RIMC and five Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS), contribute twenty-five to thirty per cent of officer cadets to the NDA and INA. As per data till 2021, there were thirty-three Sainik Schools, and the Ministry of Defence will establish a hundred more boarding Sainik Schools soon in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The aim of the Sainik Schools is to make the students lead their lives as officers in the Defence Services of the country. Sainik schools select bright and promising students through their very own entrance exam, the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination or the AISSEE for short, and focus on moulding their overall personality by emphasising extracurricular activities.

The resources offered at Sainik schools allow cadets to develop their skills in academics as well as sports and other extracurricular activities. Infrastructure in Sainik Schools include running tracks, indoor games,  cross-country tracks, parade grounds, canoeing clubs, horse riding clubs, mountaineering clubs, trekking and hiking club, boxing rings, firing ranges, and obstacles courses, football, hockey and cricket fields, and also volleyball and basketball courts.
