Social belonging in students can be defined as a sense of connection with a positive, significant, and lasting interpersonal relationship.
There are different factors of social belonging. These factors are characterized as validation, social feedback, and shared experiences. If a person has or shares common interests and goals with other people, this will bring positive strength to social bonds. It also helps to enhance the feeling of self-worth.
Every human wants to have or maintain a social bond. No one can live or sustain life in isolation. If a person senses any threat in social belonging, it will affect the ability of a person to self-regulate. It is important for a person’s well-being and functioning to have a social relationship with other people. Social belonging in students will help them in academic achievement and better academic performance.
The acceptance and rejection of a person from any society affect a person’s goals and motivation. If a person gets a small cue of social connection, it will help to internalize the motivations and goals of others too. Discrimination affects a person more in terms of social bonds. The people who are facing discrimination on any front become uncertain in the quality of their bonds.
Even Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory considers social belonging needs as one of the most important psychological needs.
