Deductive Thinking

Deductive thinking is also known as deductive reasoning or deductive logic. It is a type of logical thinking that starts with a general or basic idea to reach a specific conclusion. This idea of moving from general to specific is also known as the top-down approach.

In deductive reasoning, the deduction starts with a general statement or hypothesis. All the possibilities are adequately examined to reach a specific and logical conclusion. In all the scientific methods, the deduction is used to test the hypothesis and theories. In schools, students are taught deductive thinking so that they can face real-life situations in the future. It is a part of life skills education.

Deductive thinking goes in the same direction and links the premises with the conclusion. In case the premises are accurate, the terms are clear, and the reasons or logics followed by deductions are correct, then the conclusion reached is necessarily right. Classroom activities are developed to foster such skills.

Deductive thinking is applied in various organizations and various departments and is valued by employers. It is an important skill, most importantly, for the managers who need to make multiple critical decisions regularly.

It can be developed by enriching the knowledge base by reading and researching various topics. Also, the skill can be acquired by solving challenging puzzles and building new patterns every day.
